what are you looking at

As a photographer I ask myself this question a lot. Sometimes the subject is obscured and that obscurity is often created by my own lack of vision.

My minimal Mt Pleasant

This is a vew that I see everyday. Hanna and I draw on these windows all the time. Today a light bulb went off. I had done some photos earlier last week of hearts Hanna and I had drawn on the window. It was the sketch that later lead to this photograph. I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s more refined, but I would say that it has better intention and bit of playfulness.

illumination & reflection

I had the great opportunity to see Freeman Patterson lecture yesterday. One thing that he said rang true with what I tell my students, “it’s not about how you shoot something, it’s why you photograph it.”

This photograph was taken at sunrise this morning. I really enjoy sunrises and very rarely shoot them. I’m not interested in producing these images, however, in the past few months I’ve really been drawn to shadows & reflections. Parts of this interest are not new, but my perspective is different.

enlightenment

This is a photo of the Vancouver Library on a summer evening. I like the light that filters through the windows and casts long sweeping shadows over the curved architecture. I shot this in colour and decided to finish it as a B&W.  There seems to be more drama in the light and the photograph as a whole in B&W. Maybe one day I’ll revisit the colour one and think otherwise.

In my hand

I walk down this alley almost every day. It is my route to an from Vancouver Photo Workshops & the Photo Haus Gallery where I work and teach. This morning Hanna and I were out for and early walk to enjoy the nice day. They must be doing work in the alley because I seemed to notice this paint only today. I was trying to make a nice composition but there was no way to avoid having our shadows in the frame, so I went with it.
